The holiday was established at the initiative of the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 with the aim of recognizing and encouraging the work of volunteers around the world.
In 2023 the topic of the International Volunteer Day is "The power of collective action: if everyone did".
Volunteering is becoming more popular every year. In the Commonwealth of Independent States volunteering has been regulated by the Model Law "On volunteering".
