The publication consists of three parts. The first one examines attempts to describe changes in volunteering over the years. The advanced concepts of volunteering as a social practice are analyzed. In addition, the authors study how the research took into account the contribution of volunteerism to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda. The second section is devoted to the review of the 1999 typology and its revision. The final part presents the framework for understanding the practice of volunteering in the XXI century. The document was prepared at the request of the Secretariat of the Plan of Action to Integrate Volunteering into the 2030 Agenda for the 2020 Global Technical Meeting on Volunteerism.
