In the demographic collection age-specific mortality rates are calculated as the ratio of the number of deaths at the given age during a calendar year to the average annual number of persons of that age. Similarly, cause-specific mortality rates are calculated as the ratio of the number of deaths from specified causes of death to the average annual population.
