December 5 – the International Volunteer Day

13.07.2023

Congratulations to all those involved in this holiday. We offer a selection of documents on volunteering in the Commonwealth.

This international day was established by the United Nations (hereinafter – the UN) to recognize and encourage the tireless work of volunteers around the world. It was fixed by a special resolution of the UN General Assembly in 1985.

In the CIS the activity of volunteers is regulated by the Model Law "On volunteering" adopted in 2015. It defines the legal basis of volunteering and is designed to help develop and improve relevant legislation in the CIS Member States. The law also establishes the basic principles and types of volunteer activities, goals and objectives, the main forms, types and procedures for carrying out such activities.

In 2018 the Concept of сooperation development of the CIS Member States in support of the youth volunteer movement was adopted. It promotes the expansion of the practice of informational, methodological and expert cooperation at the level of organizations and public associations.

The International Volunteer Day coincides with the Russian Volunteer Day, which was established by the Presidential Decree No. 572 of November 27, 2017. The holiday was created in order to celebrate the contribution of volunteers to solving socially significant tasks. Also, its establishment was directed at the further development of the volunteer movement, the involvement of teenagers and young people in it. Such experience gained by young people contributes to their successful socialization and upbringing.

Nowadays there are many volunteer organizations and projects in Russia. Among the largest are "WEARETOGETHER" (the organizers of the project at the federal level are the All–Russian Public Organization "Russian Union of Youth" and the All-Russian Public Movement "Association of Students of the Russian Union of Youth "Commonwealth") and "Association of Volunteer Centers". Our library contains documents reflecting their activities:
