July 15th is the World Youth Skills Day

We bring to your attention a selection of documents issued by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Since 2014 July 15 has been celebrated as the World Youth Skills Day. The day was introduced by the UN General Assembly to celebrate the importance of teaching youth skills they need to get decent jobs and entrepreneurship.

Rising youth unemployment is one of the most serious problems facing society in the modern world in developed and developing countries. Since 2017 there has been an increase in the number of young people not in the labour force and not receiving education or skills. This global day provides a unique opportunity for dialogue between youth, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, firms, employers' and workers' organizations, policy makers and development partners.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) helps various countries to cope with problems of unemployment. Today we want to present you a selection of documents of this organization from our library:

1)    Position paper "Improving the occupational safety of young workers"

Its purpose is to present existing risks to health and safety of young workers. With such a report authors also intend to initiate a global discussion about the need for labour protection of young workers.

2)    Brochure "Improving the Safety and Health of Young Workers"

This brochure provides information about the annual global campaign that highlights the need to end child labour and improve health and safety of young workers. The brochure outlines the concerted action called for by the campaign, recommendations for a comprehensive strategy needed to eliminate child labour and promote youth labour protection.

3)    Strategy "Decent work and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development"

The document details 17 goals that facilitate the achievement of decent work around the world. 8 directions that states should follow in order to provide their citizens with decent work are also presented.

4)    Textbook "United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation and the Decent Work Agenda: a trade union reference manual"

The textbook stimulates trade unions to have policies at the global, national and regional levels. It provides comments on the Cooperation Framework Program (CFP), Common Country Analysis (CCA) and Decent Work Country Programs (DWCPs). Among other things the guide draws attention to the impact the coronavirus crisis will have on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

5)    Textbook "Public employment services and the future of work. Training manual for the CIS regional network for youth employment promotion"

In this textbook authors presented a functional model of the work of the state employment service. According to authors, such a model is able to meet the rapidly changing labour market even in the situation when new types of employment appear on it.

6)    Research "Labour market transitions of young women and men in Eastern Europe and Central Asia"

The document presents an analysis of indicators formed as a result of studies in six countries of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regions. Such indicators facilitate a detailed coverage of problems facing young people in Regions that experience some of the highest unemployment rates in the world. According to the research, this situation is fraught with frustration among young people that can lead to political unrest and outward migration.

7)    Report "An assessment of the social protection system in Uzbekistan based on the Core Diagnostic Instrument (CODI)"

This report includes information on key social protection programs in Uzbekistan. It also assesses the feasibility of programs, their effectiveness, efficiency and cost-effectiveness, financial stability.

8)    Report "Women and the world of work in Uzbekistan. Towards gender equality and decent work for all"

The report presents a comprehensive analysis of women’ situation in the world of work in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The document was created as a basis for the development of policies, legislation and initiatives aimed at developing and promoting decent work for all women and men. The first section of the report contains general information about the country.
